Online Information for Backpackers about BRIGHTON!

Brighton was one of the first holiday resorts in the UK, and it is still as popular as ever! Alongside its blue flag beaches and fresh sea air, this city boasts a diverse mix of historical architecture, stylish bars, a lively arts scene, and a thriving cosmopolitan community.

The spectacular seaside palace of the Prince Regent (George IV), with its Indian domes and minarets, is a must see. And now that summer is here, it’s a perfect time to take a stroll along the famous fun-packed Brighton Pier. Enjoy the fairground rides, and grab yourself some traditional British fish and chips.

For shopping, head to the bohemian Artists’ Quarter where you can buy truly one-off pieces. For more active pursuits, try windsurfing or hire a jet-ski. There really is something for everyone and anyone in this unique seaside city.

modern art

Brighton’s 'O Contemporary' art gallery is one of Britain’s greatest modern art spaces. Here you will find a diverse collection of art from the UK and across the globe. Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Tracey Emin, and Andy Warhol are just some of the renowned artists who have had their work exhibited at the gallery.

All of the art at 'O Comtemporary' is for sale. You can buy a silkscreen copy of Gerald Laing’s iconic picture of Amy Winehouse. The friendly staff are extremely knowledgeable and, in addition to offering advice to collectors, are happy to welcome new visitors who just want to enjoy the art.

south downs way

The South Downs Way is a well trodden long distance footpath which runs for around 100 miles (160 km) from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in Sussex, with a small loop around Eastbourne. There are plenty of beautiful short walks you can do if you haven't time for the whole stretch! Stay at Gumber Bothy Camping Barn and enjoy the tranquility.

The route takes you via prehistoric droveways which have been in use for more than 6,000 years. See numerous Bronze Age round barrows along the way. The North Downs Way connects via the Downs Link at Shoreham-by-Sea for those seeking more miles!

brighton walks

The countryside is just minutes away from the city centre by bus or bike. For some fresh air and fabulous views head up to Devil’s Dyke. You won't be disappointed.

Castle Hill and Ditchling Beacon are both Nature Reserves close by. They are home to orchids, butterflies and many species of birds. Picturesque village Clayton, with its landmark Jack and Jill windmills, is well worth a visit, as is historic Ditchling.
