The thing with Newcastle, and the North East in general, is you have to make an effort to go there. It’s not somewhere you’ll regularly pass on your travels, unless of course, you’re heading up to Scotland. But ask anyone who has visited Newcastle the effort is certainly worth it. The old clichés are true and generally, that is a good thing. Newcastle is a fiercely proud city and matches this by being incredibly welcoming to visitors. The vibrancy of the people is famous and the nightlife has something to offer for everyone. Perhaps there are things about Newcastle that will surprise you. Coming runner up in City of Culture 2008 has not stopped the city investing in the Arts. The magnificent Quayside expertly echoes the wonderful, sloping architecture of Grey Street.
